Set Frequency Controls for Prospecting Campaigns

Manage how often households see your commercials with automated, aggressive, or manual frequency caps.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Overview

Frequency Controls let you manage how often a household sees your commercials over a set period of time. This feature is available for prospecting campaigns and helps you balance performance, spend, and reach.

MNTN offers three ways to manage frequency: Automated, Aggressive, and Manual.

⚠️ Warning: Manual adjustments — and in some cases, Aggressive mode — can reduce overall performance and may limit efficiency. If campaign performance is your top priority, we recommend sticking with the Automated option.

Before making changes, we recommend reviewing your campaign deliverability, or discussing with your MNTN account team.

Set Frequency Controls:

  1. Go to the Campaign tab and open the Prospecting Campaign where you want to enable Frequency Controls.

  2. From the left-hand navigation panel, click Advanced Settings.

  3. Next to Target Frequency Cap, select one of these options:

    • Automated (Recommended): Lets MNTN optimize frequency automatically to maximize performance.

    • Aggressive: Prioritizes maximum spend and deliverability with more assertive ad-buying settings to increase exposure and campaign spend.

💡 Pro Tip: Aggressive is best for advertisers prioritizing spend and deliverability. If campaign performance is a higher priority, we recommend sticking with the Automated option instead.

    • Manual: Allows you to set your own frequency caps for engaged and non-engaged audiences. If selecting Manual, choose which audience you’d like to apply the frequency cap to:

      • Non-Engaged Audiences: Consumers who haven’t visited your website after seeing one of your prospecting commercials.

      • Engaged Audiences: Consumers who have visited your website after seeing one of your prospecting commercials.

  4. Enter the number of Impressions per the number of Day(s) you would like households to receive your ads.

  5. Click Save Changes.

Quick Answers

If I set frequency controls in the past, will my settings carry over?

Yes. The frequency cap you set previously will be applied to your non-engaged audience. It will not apply to engaged audience. If you'd like a cap there as well, you can add it using this tool.

How do I monitor frequency in my reporting?

Frequency is not included by default but can be added:

  1. Go to Reporting.

  2. Click +Create Report.

  3. Choose a template or start from a blank report.

  4. Add a new widget or edit an existing one.

  5. Click the pencil icon on the widget.

  6. In the Data tab, under Metrics and select Frequency.

  7. Click Done.

  8. Click Changes.

Why is my frequency higher than my Target Frequency Cap?

Reporting can reflect higher frequency than your set cap for a few reasons:

  • Reporting shows combined frequency across non-engaged + engaged audiences.

  • Once a user visits your site, they move to the engaged audience, making them eligible for additional impressions.

  • Recent changes may take time to reflect in reporting.

  • Real-time bidding environments make exact enforcement of low caps difficult.

Why are engaged audiences targeted within my prospecting campaign?

If a user views your prospecting ad and then visits your site, the prospecting campaign can re-engage them without interference from a retargeting campaign.

This ensures:

  • Accurate attribution: Prospecting campaigns get proper credit for conversions.

  • Incrementality reporting: Allows MNTN to measure true incremental conversions and revenue from prospecting.
